How much time do I need to volunteer on the squad?
Each member volunteers at least one 12-hour shift per week and one 24-hour weekend shift per month. Some members volunteer to ride more than one 12-hour shift per week, based on their availablility.

The 12-hour weekday shifts are divided into two shifts:
               Day Shift (6am - 6pm)
               Evening Shift (6pm- 6am).

The 24-hour weekened shift is as follows:
Saturday at 8am until Sunday at 8am.

Each member is also required to attend a monthly training session(usually held on Monday evenings) and a monthly squad business meeting (usually the second Sunday evening of every month). We do not hold business meetings during the summer months (July and August).
Is there an age requirement to join the squad?
Yes. All applicants must be at least 16 years old to apply for membership to the squad and be in good overall physical shape.
Do I need to have previous experience in Emergency Medical Services (EMS) in order to join the squad?
No. Not at all. The squad will provide all the necessary training at no expense to you! Thanks to the New Jersey Training Fund, when you become a member of a volunteer first aid squad you do not have to pay for any of your courses provided that they are to advance your knowledge and training as a member of a volunteer first aid squad. They must also have been approved by both the squad and the NJ Office of Emergency Medical Services.
What kind of training will I receive if I join?
To begin riding on the squad, all members must become certified in Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers.
This is usually an 8-hour one day course that teaches you Cardio-Pulmonary Rescuitation (CPR) for Adults, Children and Infants. In addition, you are taught proper technique and usage of the Automated External Defibrillator (AED) for Adults and Children and proper technique for Foreign Body Airway Obstructions (FBAO) in Adults, Children and Infants. This certification must be renewed every two years.
Once you complete and pass the BLS for Healthcare Providers course, you are eligible to ride as a crew member.

Within one year of joining the squad, you must also enroll in an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic (EMT) course, provided at several local hospitals and EMS training centers.
The EMT-B course is a 110 hour course that teaches you the latest pre-hospital emergency care treatments and procedures. A regular course usually takes 2 months to complete. There are alternative courses, such as extended courses and accelerated courses to fit your schedule.  During the course you will become proficent in basic airway managment, trauma emergencies (spinal injuries, splinting and bleeding control), medical emergencies (cardiac, respiratory, abdominal, diabetic, allergic reaction), ambulance operations and medical documentation. Students are also required to do 10 hours in a local hospital emergency department. This certification must be renewed every three years.
At the completion of the course, you will be required to pass a skills exam to gain certification from the state of New Jersey as an EMT.

The first aid squad will also train you in emergency vehicle operations and prepare you to become an Ambulance Driver. Once you have completed this training, you will be cleared to respond to calls as a "Driver".
Once you have completed your EMT-B course, passed your state exam, and become an active, voting member of the squad, you will begin training to become a Crew Chief. A "Crew Chief" is the EMT responsible for coordinating all aspects of an emergency care scene. They have riding experience and have exhibited proficency in EMT-Basic skills and knowledge and shown leadership and command on the scene of an emergency.  Crew chiefs also hold a role in training and quality assurance among their assigned crew.
Requirements to be cleared as a "Crew Chief":
- satisfactorily meet all expectations of probationary membership
- pass a written knowledge and skills test given by training officer
-  show leadership and responsibility on calls and during drills
